The last two weekends of September, Madge of Honor and I have the distinct pleasure of co-emceeing for our favorite burlesque troupe in Boston, Rogue Burlesque! Their show is entitled Naughty Bits and runs two weekends at Club Café. Not sure which of our many characters will be appearing as your lovely (or not-so-lovely) hosts for the evening, but rest assured there will be hilarity, nudity, emcee competition and so much fun!

Vaudevillainy brings together a cavalcade of mad scientists, evil geniuses, henchmen, bad guys, wrongdoers and mischief-makers flaunting their evil prowess as the elite of Boston’s professional circus performers. These nefarious villains will astound you as they soar above the earth, juggle doomsday devices, and balance the fate of the earth on the palm of their hand.

The ever-scheming Johnny Blazes and the irretrievably evil Madge of Honor will oversee the antics of villainous jugglers, acrobats, aerialists, and bewitching burlesque dancers. Live music by the heinously delightful Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band may make you dance until you drop from exhaustion, leaving you even more susceptible to the inevitable triumph of evil over good!

Time Travelers Costume Ball

Have you ever had déjà vu? Have you happened to notice repeatedly when your clock reads 11:11? Have you watched “12 Monkeys,” “Time Bandits,” or the over-the-top romantic drama “Somewhere In Time” more times than you can count? Are you an H.G. Wells fan? Do you feel like you’re from another time?

Well, here’s a chance to dress up as a visitor from any time in the past or the future for the Time Travelers Costume Ball. This once-in-a-century event, hosted by gender-bending (and time-bending) performer, Johnny Blazes, will be packed with entertainment from the fourth dimension including:

• Art-soul band, What Time Is It, Mr. Fox?
• Steampunk stars, Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band
• Soul/funk group, Johnny Blazes and the Pretty Boys
• Kielbasia, the accordion-playing Polish lunch lady
• Comedian/performance artist, Evan O’Television
• Lolli Hoops and her speed of light hula hoop
• Special guest circus performers
• Local animation and film shorts
• Costume prizes

This variety-packed party will take the audience on a trip, bouncing forwards and backwards through time, music, style, laughs, sex, and relativity, culminating in a mind-altering dance party.

Boston is notorious for jumping straight from Winter to Summer, with barely a nod to Spring. And what better way to celebrate that microsecond of vernal bliss than with Hypothesis’s April theme: Hot vs Cold! A truly divisive topic, there may be no rivalry more hotly contested and frigidly defended. Are you a summer or winter baby? Do you like your coffee steaming or iced? Do you want ice cubes or candle wax dripped on you? Warm or cool colors? Do you have a hot temper or give the cold shoulder? Come see our artists grapple with this conundrum; they promise to run hot and cold on you.

The evening will feature: poetry from local activist-legend Letta Neely, chamber music for the modern era from duo of misfit classical musicians Goli, (perhaps sexy) slam poetry from Boston’s own prodigal son Kit Yan (also known as the more vegan half of Good Asian Drivers, and Mr. Transman 2010), as well as performances from Boston’s most innovative vaudevillians, Johnny Blazes and Madge of Honor. The presentation of findings will be followed by a dance party to the smashing sounds of Boston’s own DJ Golden Touch of Audio Chemists. Feature drinks, appropriately fluorescent and elixir-evocative, will be available at the bar for those scientists over 21.

Fetish Fashion Flea

The FFF is a New England staple– a gathering of wonderful kinksters who come together to play, teach, learn, show off, vend, buy and more! One illustrious tradition at The Flea is the New Designers’ Fetish Fashion Show on Friday night. (Ooh! Fricatives!) The runway is peppered with burlesque and circus performance between fashion sets. And a new addition this year– hopefully to become a tradition– is that I will be emceeing the fashion show!
